Oct 2nd – Dec 26th, 2021

Opening Reception: Saturday, October 2, 2021 4-6 pm
Book Signing: Sunday, October 17, 1 p.m

Β The Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH) is pleased to announce the opening of Painting Architecture, a solo exhibition by Kimberly Brooks. Painting Architecture continues Brooks’ narrative of the intersection of landscape, artifice and the viewer’s active interaction with her use of gold and silver metal to reflect light. The opening reception is on Saturday, October 2nd from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and the exhibition will remain on display until December 26, 2021.

On Oct 17th at 1:00 PM, there will be a book signing at MOAH in celebration of her recently-published book, The New Oil Painting and also which is available for purchase from The Vault Store inside the museum. Other books about the artist will also be available. In addition to these events, the staff-guided Architecture Walking Tour of The BLVD offers an in-depth look at the history, design, and contemporary use of local structures. The walking tour takes place on Sunday, October 24th at 11 a.m. and is also available for download for guests that want to experience The BLVD’s architectural history outside of the scheduled tour.

This solo exhibition by Kimberly Brooks is one in a series within the space featuring major LA artists entitled β€œStructures” which includes H.K. Zemani, Cinta Vidal, Mela M and Coleen Sterritt. Structures explores the various ways in which humans organize their mental and physical spaces through art and architecture.Β

In the largest work, β€œGod Does it Every Day ” Brooks features a dome-like entry into the immaterial world via what appears to be a three dimensional landscape within a two dimensional ancient trompe l’oeil. In β€œJerusalem”, a vibrant mosaic on silver dances next to and on top of a loose underpainting and geometric floor. In β€œKnightsbridge”, a portal in the shape of a knight’s shield overlooks a lustrous blue sky, as if peering from a balcony. A the palpable tension between abstraction and representation continues in her work.
