FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOS ANGELES – Zevitas Marcus is pleased to present “Brazen”, a solo exhibition of oil paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Kimberly Brooks. The exhibition will run from September 9 through Oct 21, 2017 with an opening reception Saturday, Sept 9, 2017 5:00 – 8:00 PM.

A deft fusion of pop and art history, Brooks continues her riff on portraiture, and the spaces that cradle paintings in all their glorious forms. In grand interiors, paintings drip from walls and people melt into abstractions within them.  Brooks suggests that acting brazen and insert gold in odd places is nothing new. Like a puppeteer, Brooks allows religious icons, ornamentation, and relics of grand portraiture to preen on the same stage.  Combined together a narrative can’t help but to emerges in the viewer’s mind. In “Talitha”, Brooks depicts a faded princess with Joan of Arc hair and a wild abstract costume.  In “Thorns”, a background of roses normally reserved for the Virgin Mary will become a painting in its own right.   Whether religious icons or forgetting kings, all once immortalized by art become a part of the same colorful landscape. As each painting teeters between abstraction and representation, Brooks’ work touches on how painters see and process the visual remnants of history.

Brooks graduated in literature from UC Berkeley in Literature and worked as a writer before exchanging the pen for the brush.   Brooks studied Painting at UCLA and OTIS.  Her work has been showcased in numerous juried exhibitions including curators from Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, California Institute of the Arts and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Brooks lives and works in Los Angeles.
